Highways & Transportation

Our engineers have long-standing experience in planning and design, public involvement, and management, with a determination to seek out the best way to achieve a project's goals. Stelling Engineers has designed over $100 million in roadway improvements for the MDT since 1997. We integrate the sometimes divergent needs of landowners, cities, tribes and government to create well-designed solutions in these areas:

  • Rural Highway Reconstruction and Design
  • Urban Street Reconstruction and Design
  • Interchange/Intersection Design
  • Transportation Planning
  • Traffic Operations and Analysis
  • Public Involvement
  • Right of Way Acquisition
  • Special Road Design Features, including:
    • bike and pedestrian features
    • rest area design
    • structural design
    • traffic controls
    • traffic signals
    • utilities
    • wildlife crossings

Someone once said, "It's not so much which road you take, but how you take it." At Stelling Engineers, we couldn't agree more.

Stelling Engineers designs roads with an understanding of the importance of the surrounding communities' goals and the adjacent property owner's issues and concerns. Our thoughtful and agressive approach to public involvement has accelerated and/or kept on schedule several major MDT reconstruction projects.

For example, in 2005 we completed the design of two north segments of the US93 Evaro to Polson corridor, which included the complex Polson Hill, the entrance into the City of Polson, and three miles of MT35 along the south shore of Flathead Lake. With a completed construction cost of $22 million, the projects were finished on schedule and within 5% of the project estimate.

An award-winning portion of this project was a problematic retaining wall at the intersection of US93 and MT35 in Polson. Its innovative design won the People's Choice Award and honorable mentions in the "Best Reconstruction of Urban/City Projects Award" and "Commercial Decorative" categories for the 2005 High Excellence Awards by the Montana Contractors' Association.
