Airports & Aviation-Related   >>  Mineral County Airport

The Mineral County (Superior) Airport services the Town of Superior, and nearby areas of Mineral County. Superior is located in western Montana along Interstate Highway I-90, approximately 60 miles northwest of Missoula, Montana. The airport is located approximately 2.5 miles east of Superior, Montana, and is bordered on the south by Interstate 90 and on the north by Old Mullan Road and timbered foothills.

The reconstruction of the Mineral County Airport was completed during 2005, with the Montana Aeronautics Division (MAD) awarding Mineral County with the "Airport of the Year" Award in 2005.. The improvements were designed by Stelling Engineers, Inc. and constructed by Riverside Contracting, Inc. for a final construction cost of $1.7 million. Funding of the project included a Federal grant from the FAA, grant and loan funding from MAD, and local matching funds. MAD also assisted with funding of the runway lighting system which was ineligible for federal funding.

The project included all the FAA Grant administration, engineering design, land acquisition (22 acres), utility relocation (2 miles of 100 KVA power transmission lines) and construction administration and inspection. The project’s result was the complete upgrade of the facility from FAA design standard B-1(a) “a small aircraft exclusively” to B-II. The final Master Plan, published in February 2003, recommended upgrading the Airport to meet Airport Reference Code B-I dimensional standards. This required the acquisition of 22 acres of land on runway approach, relocation of the 100 kV power lines to the north side of the Airport property, and reconstruction of the existing runway along a 1.00 degree rotated alignment. The new runway was rotated and shifted south to accommodate B-II dimensional standards.

Specific project actions include:

  • Removal of approximately 800 large conifer trees at west, south, and east ends of airport.
  • Acquisition of 22 acres needed for runway approach.
  • Relocation of 2-miles of 100 kV power lines along north side of airport.
  • Reconstruction of Runway (3,450 feet) with turnaround at east end.
  • Runway was reconstructed on a 1-degree skew from the existing runway orientation.
  • Construction of a half-length parallel taxiway.
  • Construction of a new aircraft apron.
  • Installation of a new MIRL Lighting system.
  • Installation of a new primary windcone, segmented circle, and supplemental windcone.
  • Installation of a new perimeter wildlife fence.
