Stelling Engineers performed the planning, land acquisition, design, and construction administration for the complete reconstruction of the Polson Airport.

The Montana Aeronautics Division awarded Polson with "Airport of the Year" Award in 2001.

Reconstruction of Polson Airport

A new runway, offset 25 feet west of the existing runway centerline, was constructed to meet FAA B-II design standards. Special features of the project included a new 4,200 foot long full length parallel taxiway, new westside taxilane complex for 14 hangars, 100,000 cubic yards of excavation, new Medium Intensity Runway Lighting System, NDB obstruction markers, new PAPIs, subsurface apron drainage system, fencing, GPS coordinate surveys, and refuse (car bodies) removal from the runway safety area.

The construction included excavation, embankment, base course, bituminous surfacing, edge drains, culvert, grading, and pavement marking. New taxilane construction required the removal and salvage of the existing non-directional beacon and relocation of existing segmented circle and wind cone.

Negotiations and an amendment of the business lease with the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes was conducted in order to complete the project.

The ALP was updated to reflect the development on this project, and a Land Use Plan was prepared and included in the ALP drawing set. The Land Use Plan incorporated an Airport Influence Area enacted by the local governing bodies. An Airport Influence Area Ordinance was also developed per the requirements of current Montana legislation.
